Performance

Optional in every 2018 Pathfinder trim, the Intelligent 4x4 drive system maximizes traction on several surfaces. This adaptive drivetrain is engineered to improve handling on gravel, snow, mud, grass and other rugged surfaces. You can easily select the drive settings by turning an electronic rotary dial near the transmission shifting lever. The 4WD Lock Mode should be selected for some of the toughest conditions. The Auto Mode automatically adjusts the torque distribution based on real-time parameters. You can also select the 2WD Mode that's ideal for normal conditions. Available only in select Toyota Highlander editions, the Dynamic Torque Control or On-Demand AWD system with intelligence (AWD-i) don't quite match the versatility of the Intelligent 4x4 system. When equipped with 4WD, this robust Nissan crossover SUV comes standard with the Hill Descent Control. Additionally, the vehicle's Hill Start Assist is compatible with front-wheel drive and 4x4 drive. Gear changes in the Pathfinder are done by the Xtronic CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) system. By contrast, the Highlander's electronically controlled automatic transmission is fixed to six or eight gear ratios. Only select trims are compatible with the Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT), which is still no match for the Xtronic system.

Digital Technology

An 8.0-inch infotainment system is standard in the 2018 Pathfinder. The NissanConnect platform delivers an array of digital applications to your fingertips. Paired with GPS navigation software, SiriusXM Traffic and Travel Link provide supplemental guidance for your road trips. The NissanConnect package also includes the Vehicle Health Report, Maintenance Alert, Remote Door Lock/Unlock and other services. Music in this Nissan crossover SUV could be played on a 13-speaker sound system by Bose. HD Radio and SiriusXM Satellite Radio are accessible on this premium audio system with the WaveGuide technology. The Toyota Highlander's 12-speaker JBL GreenEdge sound system doesn't match the acoustics of the Bose speakers. Additional entertainment for the rear passengers in the Pathfinder is provided by two 8.0-inch monitors that are paired with wireless remote controls and headphones. The Highlander's rear entertainment system includes a single 9.0-inch display that flips down from an overhead console. Both of these family-friendly vehicles support wireless Bluetooth technology for audio streaming and hands-phone calls. In the Pathfinder, Bluetooth is also used to handle incoming text messages.

Safety

Using four cameras to scan the surroundings, the 2018 Pathfinder's Intelligent Around View Monitor captures wide-angle views of any potential obstacles in your intended path. Two different views can be simultaneously displayed on this advanced optical system that's linked to the NissanConnect infotainment system. This reliable crossover SUV also comes standard with the Automatic Emergency Braking, which immediately responds to any sudden speed changes in another car that's ahead of you. The Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert also reduce your risk of getting into a side collision. Equipped with the Toyota Safety Sense P technology, the Highlander also boasts several accident-mitigation features. However, this model doesn't have any features that are similar to the Intelligent Around View Monitor. The Easy-Fill Tire Alert in the Tire Pressure Monitoring System also gives this Nissan another edge in safety.
